Should you buy Scan Tools from Amazon or from an Authorized Dealer?

Let’s get real.

You’re running a body shop. You’re juggling customers, insurance nonsense, techs calling in sick, and a car count that never seems to match the margins. The last thing you need is a $3,000 scanner that turns into a $3,000 paperweight.

And yet—every week—we take calls from folks who bought ADAS tools off Amazon and are now stuck.

Here’s what they weren’t told:

“Lifetime updates”? Rarely true. Many Amazon listings claim it, but the devices show “expired” the moment you turn them on. Updates are crucial in ADAS—without them, you won’t have all your bases covered.

No authorized support. When your tablet glitches mid-calibration or the software throws an error, who do you call? Amazon? Good luck. If you didn’t buy from an authorized distributor, you’re on your own.

Warranty games. Even the best tools can break. But Amazon sellers vanish faster than your paint booth tech on a Friday. No warranty = no replacement = more downtime.

Documentation? Doesn’t exist. Training? Good luck with that. Help? Gone. You don’t get access to proper onboarding or usage support. And that’s the stuff that makes these tools valuable in the first place.

Authenticity? Don’t risk it. This user on ScannerDanner reported a counterfeit Launch that wouldn’t update or would brick when updating. You also probably don’t want to risk bricking the car with inferior software/hardware.

Compatibility. Buying from a reputable dealer will ensure the tool is meant for the North American market, unlike this user's experience.

If you’re buying your diagnostic or ADAS tools off Amazon, you might save a couple bucks, but for something that your livelihood depends on, it’s just not worth the risk.

You wouldn’t buy your frame machine out of a guy’s trunk. Why treat your scanner any different?

Bottom line: Buy like your business depends on it—because it does.

If you want equipment and support, buy from someone who picks up the phone when it matters.

We do.
