Launch Tech USA: A Longstanding Presence in Comprehensive Automotive Diagnostics

Every established diagnostic brand arrives at its position in the aftermarket through a different path. Launch Tech USA’s history reflects a steady and sustained focus on broad vehicle coverage, advanced diagnostic functionality, and practical workshop use.

This article is part of our ongoing vendor deep-dive series at ADAS Depot, where we highlight companies that play a meaningful role in today’s diagnostic and ADAS ecosystem. Launch Tech USA has been active in the North American aftermarket for more than two decades, serving as the primary U.S. and Canadian partner and distributor for technologies developed by its global parent company, Launch Tech Co., Ltd.

From its early years, Launch Tech USA has focused on delivering diagnostic and workshop solutions designed to support the needs of independent repair facilities across a wide range of vehicle makes and models.

Early emphasis on advanced diagnostics

At a time when many aftermarket tools were centered primarily on basic OBD code reading, Launch Tech USA introduced diagnostic platforms aimed at deeper vehicle system access, functional testing, and repair-related procedures.

The X-431 series emerged early on as Launch’s flagship diagnostic platform in North America. Over time, the platform became known for offering:

  • extensive multi-make vehicle coverage
  • bi-directional controls
  • advanced service and relearn functions

These capabilities positioned Launch as a diagnostic solution commonly used by technicians working across diverse vehicle platforms, including domestic, Asian, and European applications.

Expanding access through scalable solutions

In addition to its professional diagnostic platforms, Launch Tech USA also developed high-volume code reader solutions that achieved wide adoption in the aftermarket. A notable example is the CReader, which was private-labeled by Mac Tools as the ET50 and sold more than one million units under the Launch Tech USA brand.

This approach allowed Launch to serve multiple segments of the market, from entry-level diagnostic needs to more advanced professional applications, without limiting its focus to a single shop profile.

Broadening vehicle coverage and platform capabilities

Launch initially gained traction among technicians servicing European specialty vehicles, where deeper system access and manufacturer-specific functionality are often required. Through a strategic expansion led by Launch Engineering, the company extended its diagnostic coverage to include domestic vehicles and a broader range of makes and models.

One of Launch’s distinguishing characteristics has been vehicle-specific module coverage, providing access to a wide range of systems, service resets, warning indicators, and relearn procedures across multiple manufacturers.

In 2003, Launch introduced what is widely cited as the first aftermarket wireless Bluetooth scan tool, contributing to increased mobility and flexibility within the service bay, features that have since become standard across the industry.

ADAS Depot perspective: how Launch is typically used

Like all diagnostic platforms, Launch tools are applied differently depending on shop specialization, service mix, and workflow preferences. Some operations prioritize OEM-specific environments, while others rely on a combination of multi-make diagnostic platforms and specialized tools.

Based on our experience at ADAS Depot, Launch is commonly used by shops as:

  • a primary multi-make diagnostic solution
  • a complementary platform alongside OEM or ADAS-specific systems
  • a tool for diagnostics, service resets, and pre- and post-calibration checks

Its breadth of coverage and functional depth make it a practical option for independent repair facilities managing an increasingly diverse vehicle population.

We at ADAS Depot are big fans of Launch Tech. We think highly of their product usability, support, modular design, and vehicle coverage.

At ADAS Depot, our objective is not to promote individual brands, but to help repair facilities understand how different technologies fit into their operations. Launch Tech USA’s long-standing presence and continued development provide useful context for shops evaluating diagnostic solutions in a rapidly changing environment.

In the coming weeks, we will continue publishing additional vendor profiles as part of this series. Stay tuned for more insights from the ADAS Depot team.
