Getting Started With ADAS Calibration

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are systems designed into cars to provide an extra layer of safety to the driver and passengers. The most common ADAS safety systems include lane departure warning, front collision detection, rear collision detection, and blind spot detection. These and other systems require sensors to function correctly.

Currently only 10% of vehicles globally have some sort of ADAS functionality. The penetration of these is growing due to regulations. The industry projects that 30% of cars will have ADAS functionality by 2025, more than tripling the vehicle base. This is one of the most exciting growth areas within the automotive service industry, and ADAS Depot is glad to be a knowledgeable and reliable partner in supplying ADAS equipment and supplies, so that we can keep drivers around the world safe.

To get started with ADAS, we recommend first deciding whether you want a mobile ADAS calibration system that can be transported from location to location, or if you want a stationary ADAS calibration system. The mobile one has obvious benefits in that it can be transported in a van if you are doing calibrations at the customer's house, or if you are performing a sublet job at another business's facility. However stationary systems are much faster and they require less setup time, so they would be recommended for those that are doing their own repairs in-house.

For the mobile system, we recommend the ADAS Mobile All Systems 2.0 Bundle With Tablet. For a stationary system, we would actually recommend the cheaper ADAS Stationary All Systems 2.0 Bundle With Tablet. We also have Lane Departure Warning only bundles, which are geared more towards auto windshield installers, since that is typically the only ADAS system that requires calibration.

While the upfront costs are quite high, in our experience the payback periods have ranged anywhere from 6 weeks to 9 months. We see that most shops charge anywhere from $300-$500 per calibration, and generally they take 30 minutes per vehicle depending on experience. It takes a technician probably 10-15 calibrations for them to become proficient, and with experience they inevitably work faster. The payback on the equipment will only become faster in the future as the number of vehicles with ADAS features increase.

We also offer financing, which can reduce the monthly costs on the Mobile All Systems 2.0 or the Stationary All Systems 2.0 to around $1,500 per month. Assuming a price of $350 per calibration, that would mean 4-5 calibrations per month, or only roughly one per week, would pay for the equipment itself.

ADAS Depot is also your trusted supplier for all ADAS calibration supplies and equipment. Send us an email or give us a call if you have any questions about how to get started in ADAS Calibration.
