Why Your Shop Needs ADAS Targets

Vehicles use numerous computer systems, cameras, and sensors to improve functionality, performance, and passenger safety. ADAS targets and calibration plates are one of three core components required for calibrations. They are commonly used tools that ensure these systems are accurate and functioning correctly after repairs—especially newer vehicles that rely on these sensor systems for things like lane departures, backups, and other features that prevent collisions.

Here are some of the reasons why so many auto body and repair shops have come to rely on targets and target bundles as an ADAS calibration tool.

Ensuring Complete Repairs

Vehicles rely heavily on sensors in their front end, windshield, suspension, and other areas to provide accurate information to the driver about the state of the vehicle at any given time.

It’s often necessary to replace these sensors after repairs or part replacements. Using the right calibration targets ensures that you are realigning the vehicle with its original settings. In turn, you can better guarantee every vehicle you repair is safe, functional, and able to accurately detect potential issues on the road whenever the driver needs it most.

Compliance with Manufacturer Requirements

Every manufacturer has a unique set of requirements for its vehicles. These vehicles are also required to be consistent with regulatory safety requirements from both government agencies and the manufacturers themselves.

ADAS calibrations are essential for helping vehicles remain consistent and compliant, so drivers can know they’re safe whether they need a windshield replacement or extensive rear-end work.

Improved ROI

ADAS targets are becoming more and more involved in the repair process as vehicles continue to become more sophisticated in their sensory capabilities. Much like diagnostic tablets, they are essential for helping vehicles maintain their accuracy and protecting drivers during standard operations.

Because they are relatively low-cost compared to the amount of value they give to the vehicle and are very reusable when you service the same types of cars often, ADAS calibrations have a high return on investment for auto body shops and collision repair centers.

Types of ADAS Sensor Calibration Tools

Static Camera Targets

These targets are primarily used to train the car’s cameras. They direct the cameras in the vehicle to capture the angle they need for accurate information while the vehicle is reversing or approaching potential obstacles.

While they can, in theory, be used with a homemade frame or stand because many brands supply them as hard boards, we strongly encourage using a manufactured stand for better accuracy. This will ensure that the vehicle’s targeting system is as accurate as possible. It also minimizes the possibility of human error during setup.

Radar Targets

Radar targets are essential for helping vehicles detect potential road hazards or other objects within proximity of the vehicle. During ADAS calibrations, the aiming targets you use for these systems should be reflective to radio waves. These reflected radio waves tell the system whether they are positioned correctly or if they need to be adjusted for proper orientation and aim.

Unlike static camera targets, radar reflectors tend to be more universal. The recommended radar targets can vary from one manufacturer to the next, so it’s essential to ensure the targets you choose are compatible with the types of vehicles you service.

Lidar Targets

Lidar sensors improve vehicle safety with more accurate, high-res mapping and depth perception information that drivers can use to make predictable decisions on the road. However, they also require their own specialized targets during the ADAS calibration process.

These targets reflect light at the sensors on the vehicle to help lidar sensors aim themselves as needed. While every manufacturer has differing requirements for their lidar sensors, they are essential to have on newer vehicles, especially as they refine their road hazard mitigation capabilities.
